Truth or Dare | Connecting Communities

Remixed Vol. 1 | Truth or Dare

Remix the Symphony has put together a playlist of music and videos that connect classical music with contemporary music. We’ve used the classic game Truth or Dare to tie it all together. Take a look at the rest of the videos we’ve made and check out the full playlist of songs at the bottom of the page. More songs and videos are on their way, so keep watching us here and on social media for all the latest updates about Remix the Symphony!

Story Behind the Song | Vivaldi Told by Pedro Fernandez

DARE: Is there any way to find something in common with the life of someone who lived hundreds of years ago? Pedro Fernandez, percussionist for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, tells the story of Antonio Vivaldi’s life… and adds his own commentary as well.

Song featured: Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 8, RV 315, “L’estate” by Antonio Vivaldi

Connecting to Classical | Jordan and Beethoven

TRUTH: Sometimes it’s difficult to connect to classical music because it feels like it was written so long ago that we can’t possibly relate to it or the context it was written in. So we asked our friend Jordan to answer some questions that connect Beethoven’s Fur Elise to her own life.

Song Featured: Für Elise by Ludwig van Beethoven, 1810

(Mostly) True History | Franz Joseph Haydn

DARE: Is it possible to treat a classical composer’s life like a comedy sketch? We asked our friends at BardFest to dramatize a few real moments from Joseph Haydn’s life, who lived in the 1700s. The result is mostly accurate and very ridiculous.

Song Featured: Trumpet Concerto in E flat by Franz Joseph Haydn, 1796

Musicians Remix Their Lives | The Indigos

TRUTH: Everyone has regrets, hopes, and things they wish they could change about their life. Members of The Indigos, an independent rock band, tell us what they would do if they could remix their life.

Song Featured: Concerto in G minor by Antonio Vivaldi, 1729

Jecorey “1200” Arthur

Jecorey “1200” Arthur is a rapper, composer, teacher, and performer from Louisville, Kentucky. In January, Jecorey traveled to Indianapolis, where he performed with the ISO for their Happy Hour series. While he was in town, Remix the Symphony collaborated with The Lodge Recording Studios to produce an original track that remixed “An Alpine Symphony” from the ISO’s Music of the Earth Festival.

Remix Station – iMOCA Gallery | October 22nd, 2016

Music is central to both Fountain Square and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. How can we tell the story of both communities by remixing memories and music?

The Remix Station is an interactive installation that takes the classic game Truth or Dare and uses it as a tool to connect communities and create a larger work of art.

People complete prompts at the Remix Station. Those who pick “truth” share a story. Those who pick “dare” remix a story that has already been shared. The Remix Station travels to different locations in Indianapolis. As more people participate, more stories are remixed and added on to and transformed. The goal is to connect contemporary and classical music, the Fountain Square community and the ISO community. If a person answers a “truth” at one location, it might be remixed or responded to at another. Every person who contributes becomes part of something larger.

The Remix Station is connected to the content in Remixed Vol. 1: Truth or Dare. If you want to listen to classical music and contemporary remixes, see musicians answering truths and artists completing dares, check out the playlist of videos and music.

If you’re interested in the Remix Station: Connecting Communities, it will be touring Indianapolis at different locations! Upcoming dates will be announced here and on social media as they are confirmed.

On October 22nd, the Remix Station traveled to the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (iMOCA).

On October 5th, the Remix Station had its first participants: members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra staff. It was exciting to get the project out in front of people for the first time, and it was especially great to be able to test it with the staff of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

In answering the truth prompts and using the dares provided, the staff expressed their feelings about themselves and the world around them. Seeing the bursts of creativity that could come out of these small prompts was incredibly exciting, and the content they produced gave an exciting view into the minds of the people behind the ISO.
